Artist's Comments

Happened to be zapping through the TV channels when I came accross a pseudo intellectual experiment where a guy was lighting emptied teabags to explain the movement of hot and cold air.

Groovy, I thought, and ran off to the kitchen, grabbing my tripod and camera on the way.

I sacrificed a bag of stinging-nettle tea (I can't even remember how that got to be in the kitchen in the first place) and reproduced the experiement.

Decided against just posting the last frame where the teabag lifts off in a tiny fireball.

Digital, Canon A80 on tripod, 1 sec inbetween shots, F-stop: 2,8, focal length: 8mm, 1 sec exposure time.
Put together in PS, channel mixer, desaturation, sharpening.

that's awesome! I can never catch fire on my camera, it always messes up really bad.

you've inspired me to light things on fire! Very nice capture, fire is not easy to get right all the time.

sure, give it a go!

i went through three teabags before i got the settings and lighting right. total darkness isn't good, you need some light. makes it easier to see what you're doing, too. after all, you don't wanna end up lighting your camera and fumbling for the shutter release on the teabag...

as for the tea - i can't remember actually drinking it. mind you, i can't imagine it tasting any good...

i had to go through a few teabags before i got this right...
not being in total darkness and putting more distance between flame and camera worked in the end.

as long as you don't burn down your house or camera, you should be fine. :)
